County pupils walk to school

Primary schools from across Hertfordshire will take part in national Walk to School week, which takes place between 18 May and 22 May.

This 2009 theme is Walk ‘n’ Talk and it is expected that almost 55,000 pupils from 250 primary schools will help to highlight the social side of walking to school.

The week will be co-ordinated by the county council’s school travel team, which will urge parents to leave their cars at home as often as possible.

Val Male is one of the school travel advisers at the county council, and she said the reaction from the primary schools has been encouraging.

She explained: "Walk to School week is tremendously popular with schools around the county and we've had a great response. As ever, many schools have come up with great ideas to get pupils walking, such as the car-free day in Tring.

"As well as the social side of walking to school with your family and friends, walking is a great way to get fit and also reduces the number of cars on the road and emissions produced,” added Male.
