Learning to save lives
Life-saving skills were the order of the day for 16 young Hertsmere police cadets.
As part of their ongoing skills development, the cadets completed a one-day basic life-saving first aid and workplace health and safety course.
Cllr John Donne, president of the cadets, explained: “The cadets learnt a range of skills including how to manage an incident and the priorities of first aid treatment, among other things. All the cadets passed and will be presented with their certificates later this year as part of their annual parade.”
Valerie Kane, volunteer cadet instructor, added: “It was great to see the cadets learning such valuable skills in a safe environment. As well as dealing with an unconscious casualty and how to resuscitate someone, they dealt with shock, choking, seizures, bleeding and common workplace injuries. Their training will now be valid for three years.”
The cadets - 11 aged 15 and under and five aged 16 and over - took part in the sessions at Hertsmere Borough Council’s offices and training was delivered by Pro-Action, a charity which supports young people in Hertfordshire and Iain Macleod, health and safety trainer.
