Wiggenhall Road waste site to close?
Watford residents have until 20 June to make representations to Hertfordshire County Council over its proposals to close Watford’s established waste and recycling depot on Wiggenhall Road.
The well-used Wiggenhall Road site is run and managed by the county council, and the waste management panel at the council has earmarked an October closure date.
Last year, the site had over 218,000 visits, but the council is suggesting that those who currently use the site should instead travel to other sites in Elstree, Rickmansworth or Bricket Wood.
Watford Borough Council has claimed that the closure of the site would lead to many extra car journeys for local residents with round trips of 10 miles to most of the other sites.
Further, the local council added that the loss of the Wiggenhall Road site will lead to congestion and a rise in carbon emissions, and could increase local fly-tipping.
Watford Borough Council has moved to try and secure the depot’s future by even offering more land for use at no additional cost.
Representations to the county council should be received by Friday 20 June, to the Waste Management Unit, County Hall, Pegs Lane, Hertford, SG13 8DN or email to hertsdirect@hertscc.gov.uk.
