Herts CC pleads with locals over post office closure threat
Hertfordshire County Council has launched a webcast, asking county residents to express their views on the potential consequences of countywide post office closure.
This is part of an evidence-gathering process that the county council believes will help to convince the Post Office to halt its plans to close any of Hertfordshire’s branches.
Richard Roberts, county councillor is co-ordinating the council’s response, and he said: “We want to get a full picture of what the closures will mean for local people. We are also writing to district, town and parish councils, community groups and other organisations to ensure that our submission and challenge to the Post Office includes all relevant information.
“It may be that, if a post office closes, a shop will also close, leaving a community without its heart.
“We know that the Post Office has done a lot of research and based the proposed closures on usage but that doesn’t tell us everything. Local people know their own areas inside out and can give us vital information,” Cllr Roberts added.
Councillor Roberts will feature in the webcast on the county council’s website once the full list of proposed closures is revealed, asking people respond to a web survey.
“We will use the information that people give us but we would also urge them to respond directly to the Post Office as well if they feel strongly about the issue, “he added.
The webcast is available at www.hertsdirect.org.uk.
