Wiggenhall Road waste site tipped to be saved

Hertfordshire County Council's Waste Management Panel has recommended that the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) at Watford is to be kept open.

Up for debate at the county council’s Waste Management Panel on Wednesday 9 July was the proposed closure of the Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) at Tring and Watford. The Panel recommended that the Wiggenhall Road site in Watford should stay open, subject to lease agreements with Watford Borough Council.

Derrick Ashley, county councillor, said: “Following on from our public consultation about these sites, the Waste Management Panel recommended that the Watford HWRC stays open.

"Now that the borough council has made an improved offer of additional land, this resolves the operational difficulties that we had at this site. We will invest in improvements to the layout and safety of the site in order to deliver a standard of service that we feel is required by residents.
"We have listened to the public about the Tring site and, although there is a suitable and convenient alternative at Berkhamstead, many residents asked for Tring to stay open until the new site at Aston Clinton is ready, which will provide a further alternative for recycling."
These recommendations will now go to the Cabinet on July 21.
