Council opposes PO closures and considers Town Hall site

Watford Borough Council has agreed to call upon the government to withdraw its current proposal to close three post offices in the Watford area.

Post office sites on Leavesden Road, Bushey Mill Lane and Queens Road have all been targeted by the government, and rather than close sites, the council wants to look for ways to continue offering post office services for as many local residents as possible.

Watford’s mayor, Dorothy Thornhill, and the cabinet will submit a response on behalf of the council as part of the statutory consultation process opposing the three closures, and the council also called on Watford’s Member of Parliament publicly to support the fight to save the post offices.

The Council will also consider opening a post office at the Town Hall or other similar Watford Borough Council owned location.
According to the council, post offices are essential facilities for local communities and closing them is harmful to vulnerable people, to local residents and to business activity within Watford.

Further, Watford Borough Council has said that it believes the government should promote a positive future for post offices through investing in the post office network and opening new branches where they are needed by the public.
